Routinely vast assertions are made, often by zealous protestants, about how the ‘modern church’ destroyed the ‘real’ Christian Church. Frequently these involve accusations like ‘Constantine invested the church’. I would like to refute a few of these and describe what we do know about the Early Christians. There is a small group of people who profess belief in gnosticism (Early non-Christian writings) and suggest that St Paul invented Christianity. This refutal cannot address those so obviously outside of Christianity, that they do not even acknowledge the Churches the Disciples and Apostles do.
For starters I would like to add one Read Full Article [...]
According to FoxNews Russia has finally put to an end adoption policies that have been hurting Russian Children for decades. It took a case of a woman sending an adoptive child back on an airplane alone like spoiled food to prompt an end to polices that have results in detriment and deaths to Russian children. Russian Children belong with caring Russian parents rather than acting as accessories for immoral Americans who treat them like trash when they get bored. It is high time that Russia put an end to this!
Somehow I ended up on the mailing list for Marina Orlova’s ‘Hot for Words’ so I get inundated with her increasingly high on sex appeal low on information post (a pity really, her earlier videos showed some real effort). Marina is no stranger to controversy, but has generally been at least accurate, even when she’s wearing more clothes than she is facts; which isn’t much. In her recent ‘video lesson’ she does admirable refrain from outright blasphemy but passes on a bunch of nonsense as well.
To be fair, etymologically, she at least did print some correct saxon, and germanic Read Full Article [...]
Myth #1: Pascha is a Pagan Holiday
Holy Pascha celebrates the resurrection of Christ, and the Salvation of mankind through repentance. This is the ‘Good News’ spoken of in the New Testament. Pascha takes place in accordance with Passover but according to the Julian rather than Hebrew calendar. This is why Pascha is named such; it comes from the Greek word for Passover. The earliest recorded reference to Pascha is a homily from around 150AD. Keep in mind this is older than most known copies of the New Testament writings, and during the time the Gospels were being recorded. It Read Full Article [...]
Recently I was discussing with some other Orthodox Christians the subject of attire both in and out of church. Interestingly the men in the conversation were very defensive of women dressing liberally both in and out of church (with many calling the church’s encouragement of women to wear skirts antiquated), while the women in the conversation were very defensive of the Church’s position that women should wear skirts and cover their head in church. A topic that didn’t come up much was men’s attire which surprised me as well. My understanding has always been that men should dress modestly Read Full Article [...]
My American friends keep telling me I never say anything positive on this site so I figured I’d do so.
Many Americans and Russians never ponder, thanks to so much cold war era propaganda, the similarities between our two countries.
The symbol of Russia is an eagle, as is the symbol of America. Both in fact derive from the same source; the symbol of the Roman Empire.
The flag colors of Russia are White, Blue & Red, the same colors which make up the American flag.
Both Russia & America have a long standing commitment to a representative government; The Russian ‘Zemsky Sobor’ Read Full Article [...]
Yesterday morning was interesting.
Numerous media outlets published stories saying that Russia was cutting off oil supplies to Belarus, and thus with it, supplies to markets in West Europe. These stories were all released around 5-7 AM EST, just in time to panic the US futures markets.
This caused a healthy spike in oil prices hitting almost 82 dollars a barrel. By 10:30 the press was recanting the story. No worries all is well! Belorussian oil refiners say there’s been no stop or slowing of supply, and it looks like an agreement is forthcoming for 2010.
So oil starts to fall back, Read Full Article [...]

While politicians in America work overtime to try to deflect attention from their embrace of socialism one might thing that parties are divided on all issues. This would be inaccurate however for one issue has managed to unite all sides from the idealists who supported Ron Paul, to the Neo-Cons who backed McCains attacks on Russia, to Democrats, once again bemoaning murdered journalist as though Vladimir Putin stalks them himself every evening. Not buying it? Consider what has come this week.
FoxNews, a leading NeoConservative outlet this week suggested that Russia was defending Nazism, as well as Stalinism Read Full Article [...]
A friend recently asked where to find the Lord’s prayer, as it is called in English, in Russian. This is a very important prayer in our church, and it is recited during liturgy. I noticed that very few sites call it this and it can be difficult to search for if you’re not familiar with the Russian language.
Below are both the Russian language and Old Church Slavonic versions:
Russian:
Отче наш, сущий на небесах, да святится имя Твое;
да приидет Царствие Твое; да будет воля Твоя и на земле, как на небе;
хлеб наш насущный дай нам на сей день;
и прости нам долги Read Full Article [...]
